Illustrative Essay | Part 1 - Outline
Summary
For this assignment, you will write an Illustration Essay. The focus of this essay is to look for an issue in your immediate home, city, or county, and present it to the reader with descriptive and sensory language. The issue you choose should be something that anyone could imagine or relate to, and you should attempt to connect to the reader with a deeper examination of the topic. In Part 1, you will define your topic and outline the supporting points you will include in your essay. In Part 2, you will follow the headings in the template to craft your essay. Once you have proofread your essay, submit it for feedback. In Part 3, review the feedback from your instructor. If there are any areas for improvement that are noted, make the changes to your essay, and then submit your final draft.
- Select an issue or problem within your immediate home, city, or county that you would like to explain and then suggest a solution for it. Examples:
- Student drop-off/pick-up area and traffic problems at your child’s school.
- Screen time. Do you have any house rules? Is it a constant battle?
- Time Management. How do you handle all your responsibilities?
- Is your city bike-friendly? Why or why not?

- Begin by using the outline template on the document as you share details about your essay topic. Follow the examples provided in the template to craft your argument. Fill out all sections of the outline.
- Proceed through the writing process (outlining/organizing, drafting, revising/editing/proofreading), and gather information and details to support your position and recommendations on the topic.
