Overview

The Practice Forum is a place to practice important writing skills, and share the results and reflections within a separate forum. Practice forum topics include exercises in developing an academic voice, practicing reading and writing assignments, determining approach, and evaluating thesis statements.

Respond

This week’s reading and resources focused on writing effective thesis statements. In the practice forum, you are going to practice evaluating sample thesis statements using the criteria discussed in the readings/media. To complete this activity,

  1. Select three thesis statements from Week 5 Practice Forum Appendix [DOWNLOAD].
  2. Evaluate each thesis statement using the criteria discussed in this week’s readings/media. Each thesis statement should be evaluated on a scale of 1-10. Use the attached document to complete this evaluation. The aspects from which you should evaluate are
    1. Clarity: How clearly is the thesis stated?
    2. Specific: Is the statement specific to this writing, or too general?
    3. Position: Does the statement indicate the author’s position on the topic (if appropriate)?
    4. Originality: Does the statement follow a formula, or is it original and interesting?
  3. If revision is necessary, please rewrite the thesis so that it better meets the criteria of an outstanding thesis.
