Respond

Before completing this week’s practice forum, please review this week’s readings and media on the importance of considering audience and occasion in your writing approach. The practice forum this week is focusing on how you determine the audience and occasion for your writing assignments, and how this influences your writing. Review the following video to learn more about Venn diagrams.

Follow these steps to complete this week’s practice forum exercise.

  1. Select any two writing assignments from this list Week 3 Practice Forum Appendix [DOWNLOAD].
  2. Open the Practice Forum Venn Diagram (opens in a new window, select "Use Template").
  3. In the Venn diagram, compare and contrast the two writing assignments for the following aspects:
    1. purpose of the assignment
    2. audience
    3. occasion
    4. diction (word choice)
    5. tone and style

Note: Be sure to show how the assignments are similar and different in the Venn diagram. You do NOT actually have to write the essay described.

  1. To save your Venn Diagram, select File > Download > JPEG image.
  2. In your forum post, reflect on the Venn diagram. How does analyzing the assignments for the audience and occasion help you better understand the assignment? Is this a valuable practice for you? Why or why not? Support your responses with evidence from the exercise and your own practice. (2-3 paragraphs).
  3. Upload your Venn Diagram to your forum post by selecting "Advanced" in the bottom right corner of your post. Then, click the "Insert Image" symbol on the top ribbon. Click Browse > Choose Files > select your Venn Diagram JPEG download.
